Which MINIs get the timing chain rattle?

The second-generation R56 Cooper S built from 2007 through 2010 with the N14 turbocharged engine is the classic case. The related non-turbo N12 in the base Cooper has the same tensioner design and can rattle too, though less often. The updated N18 engine from 2011 onward improved the tensioner and chain guides and is noticeably less prone, but not immune. Clubman, Convertible, and early Countryman models sharing these engines are all in the same boat.

What does it sound like?

A dry, metallic rattle from the front of the engine, on the passenger side of a MINI, for the first few seconds after a cold start. Owners describe it as sounding like a diesel. It fades as oil pressure comes up and the hydraulic tensioner refills. As the tensioner wears, the rattle lasts longer and starts showing up on warm starts too.

If you hear a rattle that does not fade after a few seconds, or a rattle at idle when warm, the chain or guides are already worn. Stop driving it and have it looked at.

Why can't it wait?

Because these are interference engines. If the chain skips a tooth, the pistons and valves can meet, and the repair becomes a cylinder head or an engine instead of a tensioner. The rattle is the early warning; the point of fixing it early is that the fix stays small.

What does a proper repair involve?

  • Confirm the diagnosis: listen on a cold start, check chain stretch with the factory timing tools, and inspect the guides through the timing cover.
  • Replace the tensioner with the current updated part. On a car past roughly 70,000 miles or with any measurable stretch, replace the chain, guides, and sprockets together rather than the tensioner alone.
  • Set timing with the locking tools, then verify with the scan tool.
  • Check oil level and pressure, and look for guide debris in the oil pan. An oil service with the correct grade goes with the job.
  • Address oil consumption if the car is using oil between changes; a healthy tensioner still needs oil to work.

How much does it cost?

It depends on whether the job is a tensioner or the full chain set, which we can only tell you after looking at the car. Under California's Bureau of Automotive Repair rules you receive a written estimate and approve the work before anything is replaced, which is how we run every job. What we can say is that catching it at the rattle stage is a fraction of what a jumped chain costs.
