Why do BMW cooling systems fail in the heat?
Because the parts under the most stress are plastic. The expansion tank, the thermostat housing, the water pump housing, and the radiator end tanks are all molded plastic that lives at coolant temperature. Every heat cycle makes the plastic a little more brittle. In Fresno or Visalia, where a car parked in the sun starts the day hot and sits in 100°F traffic in the afternoon, the cycles are harsher and the parts reach the brittle stage earlier.
Electric water pumps, used on many BMW six-cylinder engines from the mid-2000s on, add a second failure mode: the motor and electronics wear out and the pump either slows or stops. When it stops, the temperature climbs fast because there is no belt driving a backup.
How do I tell which part is leaking?

A pressure test is how we settle it. With the system cold, we pressurize it to its rated cap pressure and watch where it drops. That finds seeping tanks and housings that only leak hot, which a visual check on a cold engine misses.
What should I do when the temperature warning comes on?
Turn the heater on full to pull some heat out of the engine, and pull over as soon as it is safe. Shut the engine off. Do not open the expansion tank while it is hot; the system is pressurized and the coolant is above boiling. AAA's guidance is the same: pull over, turn the vehicle off, and let it cool before doing anything else.
Then call for a tow rather than restarting it to limp home. The difference between a water pump and a warped cylinder head is often the ten minutes someone spent trying to make it to the driveway.
Can I drive it to the shop if it is only a small leak?
If the temperature gauge is normal and you are only topping off coolant occasionally, yes, drive it in soon and keep an eye on the gauge. If the temperature has climbed past normal even once, do not. A cooling system that has already overheated can fail the next time it is asked to work hard, and Visalia traffic in August is hard work.
What does a proper cooling system repair include?
- Replace the failed part with an OEM or premium OES component. The originals on these systems are mostly Behr, Mahle, and Pierburg; a bargain tank fails the same way the original did.
- Inspect the neighbors while the system is open: if the water pump is out, the thermostat is right there and is usually replaced with it.
- Pressure-test after the repair to confirm the leak is gone and there is not a second one.
- Bleed the system with the factory procedure. BMW cooling systems air-lock easily; a system bled wrong overheats a week later.
- Check the electric fan and the coolant temperature sensor readings with the scan tool, since a fan that never comes on will overheat a perfectly sealed system.
How do I keep it from happening again?
Have the cooling system looked at during every oil service. Crust around seams, a slightly low level, or a fan that sounds tired all show up months before the failure.
